Edith Stein was born to a Jewish family in
Breslau, Germany on Yom Kippur day,
October 12, 1891.
A student of Edmund Husserl, she played
a major role in developing the philosophy
of phenomenology and knew many of
Germany’s leading intellectuals.
Edith Stein’s quest for truth led her to
embrace Catholicism. She was baptised on
New Years Day in 1922, and entered a
Carmelite monastery on October 14, 1933.
In August 1942, Edith Stein was murdered
at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration
camp, along with her sister Rosa. On
October 11, 1998, she was canonised by
Pope John Paul II.
Feminist, philosopher, mystic, victim, saint – and
woman: Edith Stein was all of these,
and more. Saga Pentamedia is committed
to bringing the fascinating story of her life
to the American people.
